Designing the Great Room – Light, Lake Views, and Cozy Luxury

The great room is the true heart of this lake house, designed as part of an open-concept layout that flows into the kitchen and dining areas. With soaring vaulted ceilings and an expansive Andersen 400 Series quad slider flanked by tall windows, this room offers uninterrupted views of the lake and effortless indoor-outdoor living thanks to a large deck just beyond the sliding glass doors.

When approaching the design, I want to honor the natural beauty just outside the windows while creating a cozy and sophisticated interior. One of my favorite ways to do that in a vaulted space is by recommending a white tongue and groove ceiling, accented with white painted beams. This detail adds texture and warmth without competing with the view. We won't be adding any window treatments on this beauty- we want to savor the view.

Another focal point in the great room will be a feature wall, where we’re considering either a light stone or a painted brick façade. Built-in shelving and cabinetry will flank this central wall, offering both function and style—ideal for storing books, displaying treasured items, and anchoring the room with architectural interest.

This space will be all about balance: rustic elegance, natural textures, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. I can’t wait to see it come to life.
