Selecting the Exterior Materials: Where Beauty Meets Durability

As we move forward in the planning stages of this new build, we’ve reached one of the most rewarding parts of the process — selecting the exterior materials. After working closely with my client to define the overall look and feel of the home, it’s time to choose the elements that will not only bring that vision to life but also stand the test of time.

For the siding, we’ve decided on HardiePlank fiber cement siding. HardiePlank offers the best of both worlds: incredible durability and a clean, classic aesthetic. It holds up beautifully against the elements — resisting moisture, fire, and pests — while providing a crisp, refined look that suits the light exterior palette we’ve chosen. It’s a material that gives homeowners peace of mind and designers like me the flexibility to create timeless curb appeal.

When it came to windows and doors, quality and versatility were at the top of our wish list. That’s why we selected Andersen 400 Series windows and doors. These offer a beautiful black exterior finish that pairs perfectly with the light siding and stone, adding depth and contrast to the design. On the interior, the wood frames give us endless options: we can leave them natural, stain them to highlight the grain, or paint them to coordinate with each room’s unique design. This flexibility allows the windows and doors to seamlessly support both the exterior architecture and the interior personality of each space.

One of my favorite parts of this phase has been visiting local suppliers with my client to find the perfect stone. We’re aiming for a gray blend that brings just the right amount of texture and variation, creating a sense of warmth and natural character. Seeing these materials in person — feeling their surface, observing how they look in different lights — ensures that the final selection complements the siding, trim, and overall vision for the home.

Each of these decisions brings us one step closer to transforming plans on paper into a home that’s not just beautiful, but built to last. I look forward to sharing more as we continue to shape this project, both outside and in.
