From Plans to Paint Colors: How Visual Tools Shape Design Decisions

One of the most exciting parts of my work as an interior designer is partnering with clients at the very start of a new build — when the possibilities are endless, and every decision helps shape a future home. Right now, I’m in the planning and beginning phases of a beautiful new construction project. I’m consulting on all aspects, from the architectural plans down to the furniture selections that will complete each space. It’s a truly collaborative process, and at this stage, we’re focusing on the exterior of the home.
The client initially envisioned a dramatic, dark exterior — something striking that would set the house apart. But as we moved beyond inspiration images and into the tangible, real-world examples, their perspective began to shift. We explored mood boards filled with materials, colors, and finishes that spoke to that bold look. Then, I took it a step further and shared real-life examples — visiting homes and reviewing photos of properties that had embraced deep, moody exteriors. When the client saw how these colors interacted with natural light, the surrounding landscape, and architectural details, they realized it wasn’t quite what they had pictured for their own home.
This is where the power of visual tools truly shines. After these early explorations, I created detailed renderings of their actual project — pulling together all the elements we’d discussed, from siding and stone to trim and roof color. Seeing their future home represented so realistically helped clarify what felt right for them. In this case, they pivoted toward a lighter, warmer palette that better reflects their style and how they want their home to feel.
This process is exactly why I emphasize mood boards, real-world examples, and custom renderings with every project. It’s easy to fall in love with a photo on Pinterest or an idea in your head — but it’s not until you see materials and colors in context that you truly know what speaks to you. These tools guide clients through the decision-making process with confidence, ensuring that every choice contributes to a cohesive, thoughtful design.
We’re just at the start of this journey, but I can’t wait to see this home come to life — from the carefully selected exterior finishes to the furniture and details that will make it uniquely theirs.
