You’ve lived in your newly designed space for a while now, and it feels like home. But, just like any great work of art, maintaining the beauty of your interior design requires some care and attention. In my last two posts, we talked about the design process, from concept to execution. Now, let's discuss how to preserve your space so it stays as beautiful as the day we completed it.
Phase 1: Regular Cleaning and Upkeep
The first and most essential part of maintaining your space is regular cleaning. Furniture, textiles, and finishes all require different care, so I always provide my clients with a personalized care guide that includes everything from fabric maintenance to the cleaning requirements of specific materials like leather, wood, or stone. This ensures that the integrity of your space is preserved while keeping it looking fresh.
Phase 2: Seasonal Adjustments
As seasons change, so do the needs of your space. For example, during the winter months, you may want to swap out lighter fabrics and textures for warmer materials like velvet, wool, or heavier throws. On the other hand, during summer, lighter, breathable fabrics like linen can keep your space feeling cool and breezy. It's always a good idea to periodically reassess your space to make sure it suits the current time of year, both in terms of comfort and aesthetic.
Phase 3: Updating and Refreshing
After living in a space for a while, you might feel like it needs a little refresh. Whether it's changing out artwork, reupholstering an old piece of furniture, or swapping out throw pillows, small updates can keep the space feeling fresh without the need for a complete overhaul. I always suggest my clients consider updates to their design every few years to ensure the space stays relevant to their evolving style and needs.
Phase 4: Preservation and Repair
From time to time, some furniture or finishes may need minor repairs or touch-ups. Whether it's re-staining a wood table, fixing a broken drawer, or patching a chipped wall, these little fixes can help maintain the quality and longevity of your design. I can also help you find reliable repair specialists who can assist with preserving your investment.
