The first thing I’m thinking about is how the finish around the firebox will frame and highlight the feature, while also tying into the bedroom’s overall look. The firebox already has a striking herringbone brick design, which offers a great starting point for inspiration. We want to build on that without making the space feel too busy.
1. Modern and Sleek:
One option is to keep things clean and minimalist by framing the firebox with a simple, sleek surround made from matte black metal or a white or neutral-toned stone. The modern contrast of a matte black frame will allow the herringbone brick background to stand out while maintaining a sophisticated, uncluttered aesthetic. This is especially appealing for those seeking a more contemporary, understated look that focuses on subtle elegance.
2. Warm and Inviting with Wood Accents:
If we want to soften the design and bring warmth to the room, wood could be the perfect material for framing. A natural wood surround would create a cozy, inviting feeling — especially with the soft glow of the electric flames. I’d likely go for a light or medium wood tone, perhaps oak or ash, which would complement the herringbone brick’s neutral tones. This approach works beautifully in spaces with a more rustic or Scandinavian vibe and would add an element of nature and texture.
3. Luxe Marble or Stone:
For a more luxurious finish, we could opt for a marble or stone surround that complements the bedroom’s existing color palette. A soft white or beige marble would provide a sense of opulence without competing with the other design elements. Marble’s veining adds a natural, refined touch to the fireplace, making it feel like a bespoke feature in the room. It would also pair beautifully with the firebox’s realistic flame effect, adding depth and dimension to the design.
4. Roman Clay Finish:
An exciting option I’m considering for this design is Roman clay — a beautiful, textured finish that brings an earthy, natural vibe to the space. Roman clay, known for its matte appearance and smooth yet slightly tactile surface, can add a layer of sophistication while maintaining warmth. It’s perfect for creating a timeless, organic aesthetic, and its ability to add depth and subtle variation in color makes it an ideal material for framing the firebox. A Roman clay finish would not only complement the herringbone brick backdrop but also harmonize with both modern and more traditional elements in the room. Plus, it has a luxurious, handcrafted feel that adds a unique touch to the design.
5. Custom Mantel or Shelving:
Finally, we could explore the option of building a custom mantel or built-in shelving around the firebox. This not only adds a focal point to the room but also creates an opportunity for functional storage or decorative displays. Think about adding a few shelves for books, art, or plants, and maybe even a small decorative piece or two above the firebox. The mantel would provide that classic fireplace feeling, creating a natural area for adding personal style and warmth.
